What to prepare
- The item details you enter when booking: description, HS code, country of manufacture, quantity and the real value. For goods for sale, also attach the seller’s commercial invoice.
- Recipient’s full name, UK phone number and address with the full postcode (for example SW1A 1AA).
- For gifts: describe the item as a gift and declare its real value.
- For commercial goods: the importer’s EORI number.
VAT and duty in the UK
Import VAT is charged on most goods arriving in the UK, and duty can apply depending on the item and its value. These are normally paid by the recipient before delivery.

Do I pay VAT on a gift sent to the UK?
Gifts between private individuals worth up to £39 are relieved from VAT. Above that, VAT and possibly duty apply.
What is an EORI number?
An Economic Operator Registration and Identification number. Businesses importing goods into the UK need one. Private individuals sending personal items do not.
Why does the booking form ask for the UK postcode?
Carriers price and route UK deliveries by postcode, so a correct postcode avoids delays and price changes.
